With a life spanning half the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Rosina was part of upwardly-mobile society that moved from the capital to the quieter town of Sliema.
She is one of my maternal great-great-grandmothers.
Her precise birth date is unclear. Based on the information I have:
- She was born in 1850 or 1851, because she declared she was 29 when she married in 18801.
- Five years later, in 1885, she declared herself to be 27 when her son Paolo was born2
- She was born in 1857 or 1858, because her family declared her to be 64 when she died in 19223.
She was born in Valletta3, daughter of Giuseppe Grech and Francesca née Casha4.
Family
On Thursday 24 June 1880 she married Emmanuele Darmenia also from Valletta1 4. The church certificate lists her as Rosaria Grech 4.
Fr Emmanuel Maria Debono officiated the wedding4 at St James’ church4.
Together they had many children:
- Paolo, named after his paternal grandfather.
- Giuseppe.
- Theresa,
- Lorenzo
- Edward
- Evelyn
- Carmelo
- Albert
- Yvonne
Notable events
After marriage, she moved to Sliema but not before giving birth to Paolo so they lived in Valletta for at least 5 years. She lived in Sliema for the rest of her life. Her last known address was 417, College Street, Sliema3.
Death
She died at 09:003 on Thursday 29 June 19223. She suffered from heart disease, compounded by bronchitis and asthma3, at home in Sliema, Malta3. Her family buried her at the Maria Addolorata Cemetery in Paola, Malta3.
