Attard-born Maria Sammut lived in the village for all her life. She tilled the land her family owned as well as having a full family life.

She is one of my paternal 3 x great-grandmothers.

She was born on Monday 23 October 1809¹ in Attard, Malta^{2 3}, daughter of Giuseppe^{4 5} and Grazia Calleja^{6 7}. Her parents baptised her on the same day as Maria Paola Giuseppa Catherina⁸.

Family

On Sunday 29 April 1838⁹ she married Gio Maria Bezzina^{10 11} in the parish church of Attard¹².

Together they had 7 children I know of:

Residence

She lived in Attard before marriage¹³, and lived there all her life because this is where she died¹⁴.

Her last known address was 12, Qormi road¹⁵.

Occupation

In 1864 she declared her profession as Lavora in Terreni¹⁶ (EN: Works the land). Since her husband was a farmer, she obviously worked on the family estate.

In 1867¹⁷, her family described her as Senza Mestiere¹⁸ which translates to “Without profession”. It’s possible that she had stopped working, but it could also reflect how her family, and societal norms, thought of her.

Death

She died on Saturday 9 March 1867¹⁹ at 10:00²⁰ at home in Attard²¹. Contrary to normal state acts of death, her cause of death is not recorded.

Her family buried her in the Roman Catholic parish church of St Mary in Attard, Malta²².
