While records are sparse, we know Hildegarde of Burgundy married her cousin William VIII, Duke of Aquitaine.

She is my 24 x great-grandmother.

Hildegarde, or Audearde, was born in Burgundy1. She was the daughter of Robert of France and his second wife Ermengarde d’Anjou1.

Titles

As the wife of a Duke of Aquitaine, she would have had the title of Duchess consort of Aquitaine. I have no evidence to show she held this title or used it in any way.

Family

In March 1069 she married her cousin William VIII, Duke of Aquitaine, becoming his third wife1. It is possible she married him to produce an heir to the Duchy, but few details exist about the reason behind the marriage.

Together they had four children2:

  • William, who succeeded his father as William IX, Duke of Aquitaine.
  • Hugh.
  • Agnes, who married the King of Aragon.
  • Beatrix, who married the King of Castile.

They separated in 10761. I don’t know why they separated.

Death

She is buried in the Abbey Church of Saint John the Evangelist of Montierneuf in Poitiers1. We don’t know when or how she died.

Lineage

She is my 24 x great-grandmother.
