One of the few Partecas who ever lived, Giuseppe moved out of Valletta and became emancipated later in life.

He is one of my paternal great-great-great-grandfathers.

He was born in the parish of Porto Salvo¹, Valletta².

His date of birth is trickier to nail down:

• He was born in either 1837 or 1838³ because he listed himself as 25 when his daughter was born in 1863.
• He was born in 1839 or 1840 because state records show him to be 78⁴ when he died in 1918.

It’s more likely that the first one is correct, since he declared that information himself.

He was the son of Antonio Parteca⁵ and Anna Cassar⁶.

Family

On Tuesday 13 April 1858⁷, he married Maria Carmela Borg⁸ in the Roman Catholic church of St Rocco⁹ in Valletta, Malta¹⁰. The Rev Giuseppe Guzman officiated¹¹.

Together they had 3 children I’m aware of:

• Antonio Paolo Giovanni
• Giovanna
• Spiro Vincenzo Carmelo Paolo

On Sunday 15 April 1866¹², he married Filomena Azzopardi¹³ in the Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Safe Haven, Valletta, Malta¹⁴.

Notable events

When he registered his daughter’s birth with the state authorities, he declared he was illiterate¹⁵.

He worked in trade, describing himself as:

• An Agente di Comercio¹⁶ (EN: Commercial agent) in 1863.
• A Negoziante (EN: Negotiator)¹⁷ in 1882.

Official documents for his death state that he was a Mendicante¹⁸ (EN: Pauper). This is unusual because, no matter what happened to him, typical Maltese families at the time would have taken care of each other. In Giuseppe’s case one of his children, Giovanna, lived close by in Sliema. I suspect that his second marriage left him penniless, but this is just speculation on my part.

Residence

As far as official records go, he was born in Valletta¹⁹ and lived there for a long time²⁰.

The 1900 electoral register lists a Giuseppe Parteca living at Sotto le Loggie 21, Sliema²¹. With such an unusual surname, I conclude this was him. 

By the time he died, he was living a few blocks away, at 5, St Helen’s street, Sliema²².

Surname

On his daughter’s act of death, he is recorded as being Giuseppe Partica²³. This is the only instance of this spelling that I’ve encountered.

Curiosities

On his death certificate, his mother is listed as “Annunziata Camilleri”²⁴ which is incorrect. Since this contains information that his family listed, I consider it as less accurate than information which he declared. Consequently, I rely on the information that he would have declared himself, for example, on his marriage certificate, to be the correct version.

Death

Giuseppe outlived his second wife²⁵, but it’s not clear how long he was a widower for.

He died on Tuesday 26 February 1918²⁶ at 09:00²⁷. Official records state his cause of death was cardiac syncope ²⁸which is a sudden loss of blood to the brain, caused by heart arrythmia. He died at home at 5, St Helen’s Street, Sliema²⁹. His family buried him in the Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery, Paola³⁰.

Family Tree
