Ermengarde was the wife of Louis I, Emperor of the West.

She is my 32 x great-grandmother.

Ermengarde was born between 775 and 780. She was the daughter of Enguerrand, Count of Hesbaye, Belgium, and an unnamed mother.

Titles

In 816, Pope Hadrian I crowned her husband Emperor of the West, and therefore crowned her Empress of the West1. The coronation took place in Reims cathedral1.

Family

Ermengarde married Louis in 7942. She was his first wife1, so her sons inherited most of the titles.

Together they had six children1:

  • Lothaire, who became Emperor Lothaire I.
  • Pepin, who became King of Aquitaine.
  • Hrotrud
  • Berta
  • Hildegarde, who married Gerard, Count of Auvergne.
  • Louis, who became King of the East Franks.

Death

She died on 03 October 818, in Angers1, France.

She died 3 days after falling ill1, but I don’t know what she suffered from. They buried her in Angers1, but I don’t know where her resting place is.
