Emanuele’s surname morphed from Imbrogl to Imbroll, possibly because of phoenetic spelling.

He is one of my maternal 4 x great-grandparents.

He was born on Tuesday 15 September 1761¹, son of Michelangelo² and Alessandra³, whose maiden name is not recorded.

His family baptised him two days later⁴ at the Church of Porto Salvo, Valletta⁵. They christened him Nicola Gio Battista Giuseppe Emanuele⁶.

His baptismal details show that his family name was “Imbrogl” but later records show it as “Imbroll”. It’s reasonable to conclude that the spelling changed but the pronounciation was the same.

Family

On Thursday 11 February 1790⁷, he married Maria Farrugia⁸ in the cathedral of the Assumption⁹ in Victoria, Gozo¹⁰.

His wife’s name differs in state and church records. State records show her maiden name to be ‘Formosa'¹¹, but church records list her as ‘Farrugia’. This is unusual because it’s more than a simple typo. My research doesn’t show any evidence that there were 2 Emmanuelle Imbrolls. ‘Imbroll’ is a rare enough surname that it would be easy to find 2, so I’m confident that this is the same person.

Together they had eight children I know of¹²:

• Giuseppa Giuditta Maria, born in 1795.
• Geronima Anna Maria Emanuela Antonia Clementina Orsola, born in 1798.
• Gaetano Pietro Matteo Cherubino Vincenzo Emanuele Eduardo, born in 1802.
• Giovanni Paolo Antonio Giuseppe Carlo, born in 1805.
• Maria Anna Vincenza Orsola Paola Giuseppa, born in 1808.
• Anna Feliciana Michela Gaetana Teresa¹³, born in 1810.
• Saverio Vincenzo Michele Venceslao, born in 1812.
• Orsola Maria Anna Deodata Saveria Felicita, born in 1815.

Notable events

Residence

He lived in Valletta after marriaged because this is where his daughter was born¹⁴.

Curiosities

For the period 1798 – 1800, during the French occupation, he was a French citizen.

Death

He was dead in 1881 when his daughter died¹⁵.
