Aloisia, or Aloisea, daughter of an Englishman, married another Englishman suggesting that society in Malta may have been more close-knit than you would expect.

She is one of my maternal 6 x great-grandmothers.

She was born on Friday 6th June 1713¹. She was the daughter of Alexander² and Generosa³. The Reverend Faccioli Rector⁴ baptized her two days later as Aloisia Antonia Maria⁵ in the Roman Catholic Collegiate church of St Paul Shipwrecked, Valletta, Malta⁶.

Family

On Tuesday 29th April 1738⁷, she married John Dodsworth⁸ in the Roman Catholic Collegiate church of St Paul Shipwrecked⁹.

Together they had two daughters that I know of¹⁰:

• Nicola
• Guglielma

Notable events

If she were alive between 1798 – 1800, during the French occupation, she was a French citizen.

Residence

Since she was baptized and married in the same church, it’s logical to conclude she lived in Valletta before marriage. Since she married the Consul of England to Malta, it’s also likely she continued living in Valletta after marriage as well.

Occupation

There is no evidence she ever worked, and given life in Malta at the time it is likely she never did.

Curiosities

Her baptizmal record shows her family name as “Yonc”. This is a clear phoenetical spelling of her father’s name. Another similar spelling is “I-oung”¹¹ which is how her name is spelled on the contract of marriage¹².

Her name is spelt as “Aloisia”¹³ or “Aloysia” but this is an obvious alternative spelling of the same name.

Death

I have no information about where she died, of what or where her family buried her.
